Ali Carter battled from behind to take the first session of the inaugural Wuhan Open final, establishing a 5-4 lead over Judd Trump.

The Captain is aiming for his second title of 2023, after he defeated Tom Ford in the final of the German Masters back in February in Berlin. Trump is hunting would would be an incredible second straight title. The Ace in the Pack lifted the Steve Davis Trophy at the English Open last Sunday in Brentwood and only began competing in Wuhan on Wednesday as a result, playing two games that day to catch up.

The match started at a blistering pace, with Trump taking the opener thanks to a break of 72 and Carter responding with 103 in the second to make it 1-1. Trump edged a truncated third in 30 minutes and then added the fourth to head into the mid-session 3-1 ahead.

When play resumed, Trump added to his lead and moved 4-1 up. Carter fluked a red to the yellow pocket in the sixth and that crucially marked a change in momentum. He made a frame winning 49 from that and reduced his arrears. The Essex cueman went on to take the next three and make it four in a row to end the afternoon with the lead.

They will return later this evening when the best of 19 encounter will be played to a conclusion. The winner will take home a top prize of £140,000.
