Ashley Carty produced a shock 5-1 defeat of former UK Champion Stephen Maguire at BetVictor European Masters qualifying in Cannock.
Rotherham’s world number 70 Carty is in need of a strong campaign to push himself inside the world’s top 64 and ensure tour survival at the end of the season. Today’s victory has earned him a trip to Fürth next year for the final stages.
Defeat ends an otherwise positive week of qualifying in Cannock for Maguire on a sour note, the Scot came into today having already won two matches to clinch his place in the final stages of the BetVictor German Masters.
Carty made breaks of 76, 54 and 89 on his way to this evening’s win and he will now face Iran’s Soheil Vahedi in Fürth.
Shaun Murphy secured his trip to Germany with a 5-2 defeat of amateur Simon Blackwell. The Magician conjured breaks of 127, 65 and 134 during tonight’s encounter.
Kyren Wilson defeated Lyu Haotian 5-2 to qualify and Luca Brecel progressed with a 5-1 defeat of Barry Pinches.
Irish teenager Aaron Hill secured his first knockout event match win of the season with a 5-4 victory against Zhao Xintong, while Jamie Jones edged past Tian Pengfei 5-4.
Qualifying action continues in Cannock on Friday.
