World number two Judd Trump believes he has the ideal partner for next month’s BetVictor World Mixed Doubles, in three-time Women’s World Champion Ng On Yee, stating that the Hong Kong cueist is leading the way for the women’s game.
On Yee recently scored her best win on the professional circuit, when she defeated former World Champion Ken Doherty 4-3 to qualify for the final stages of the Cazoo British Open. The 32-year-old also beat Wu Yize last season and took Shaun Murphy to a deciding frame.
Trump has been impressed by the way On Yee has performed since joining the professional tour and thinks they have the attributes as a team to mount a strong bid to become the inaugural winners of the mixed doubles.
“It brings a different type of pressure. You don’t want to let your partner down. I’m hoping that I don’t let her down. This is a new event and we want to be the first pair to win it. I think with my potting, her safety and her potting we will have a good chance to win,” said 23-time ranking event winner Trump.
“Hopefully she keeps up the form she had beating Ken when she plays with me. It was an amazing win to beat Ken, I know he is coming to the end of his career but he is still a great player. I’ve seen a bit of her recently and she looks like she is putting the work in. Each time I see her, she seems like she is improving. I think she is spearheading the women’s game at the moment and managing to get the wins against the men. It is a brilliant draw for me.”
Trump hopes that the television audience tuning in on the main ITV channel will lead to more people being inspired to pick up a cue and that it could act as a catalyst for enhancing participation in the women’s game.
“It is especially good for the women,” he added. “It gives them a chance to get their names out there. Especially considering what has been happening in other sports. It will be good for women sat at home to hopefully be inspired. It would be great to have strength in depth with the women’s game and a ranking list down to 128 that can compete with the men. It’s something new for everyone. Any time there is a new format, or a new event, it is very exciting for the sport. For ITV to be getting involved is good, it is good for women’s snooker and it is good for the men. It should be a fun event, but we will all want to win it when we are there.”
