Kyren Wilson thrashed Gary Wilson 6-1 to set up a semi-final showdown with Shaun Murphy at the Duelbits Players Championship in Wolverhampton.
This particular edition of the Wilson derby had an extra edge, with it being the first time the pair have met since a fiery clash at the Scottish Open before Christmas.
On that occasion Kyren intimated he was unhappy with Gary’s behaviour during the encounter. The latter won the match and would go on to win the event to pick up his maiden ranking title. Kyren revealed they have buried the hatchet following today’s match.
This time it was Kyren who prevailed and he’s extended his overall lead in meetings with his namesake. He now leads 4-1 in the head-to-head standings.
The Kettering cueman faces an intriguing clash with Murphy in the last four on Saturday evening. Wilson is still trying to add his second ranking crown of the campaign after victory at the European Masters last year. Murphy is aiming to cash in on a purple patch, he was runner-up at last week’s Welsh Open, but is yet to secure silverware this season.
The Warrior wasted little time in asserting his authority on the tie this afternoon. Breaks of 92 and 64 helped him on his way to leading 4-0 at the mid-session interval.
Gary got his first frame on the board when play resumed, but it would prove to be his last of the match. Kyren moved 5-1 in front and then crossed the line with a century run of 104.
“I’m really pleased. I manged to settle quickly with a nice 92 break. The table had been reclothed so you can take a bit of time to settle. I’m pleased that I kicked on,” said Kyren Wilson.
“You obviously remember if you lost the game. Gary won that match at the Scottish Open, so it is nice to turn it back in my favour today. I saw Gary in Cheltenham at the World Grand Prix and shook his hand to congratulate him on his first ranking title. It is a bit of a family when we are on tour travelling around, it is no good having animosity.
“I love playing Shaun. He is playing very well. He has put the loss to Rob in the final of the Welsh Open to bed and cracked on again here in Wolverhampton. I am going to need to be on top of my game to beat him.”
