On the Level…

By Peter Tesh, Sr. Writer Snooker Site©

Leveling a snooker table, now that brings me back to my youth in Dublin. You see, I had this 6×3 table in our garage, which was as slanted as a politician’s promise. So, believe me, when it comes to making a pool table level, I’ve had my fair share of practice!

Step 1: The Gathering

First things first, grab your tools. You’ll need a level (not your sense of humor, but the tool), some shims (these are not dance moves – beer matts can work), a wrench, and a trusty tape measure. It’s like preparing for a heist, but we’re not that exciting.

Step 2: Place Your Bet

Now, position your table where you fancy. Remember, the floor is your frenemy here. If it’s more uneven than (insert another analogy here:), you’ll have more adjusting to do.

Step 3: The First Dance

Slap the level on the table. You’re checking for a balance more delicate than your aunt’s fruitcake recipe (sorry, can’t help it). Adjust the legs or shimmy those shims under the feet for a quick fix.

Keep the level handy – it’s your new best friend.

Step 4: The Nitty-Gritty

Time for the fine-tuning. Wander around the table with your level like a detective at a crime scene. Focus on the middle, the corners, and the in-betweens. Tiny adjustments can make a big difference – think of it like seasoning a stew.

Step 5: The Diagonal Waltz

Measure corner to corner. If the numbers are like mismatched socks, adjust until they’re a pair.

6: The Reveal

Keep checking the level after each tweak. It’s a bit like asking, “Are we there yet?” on a long road trip, but way more satisfying.

7: The Ball Roll Test

Roll a ball across the table. For me, this is it and self explanatory. Unnatural movement of the balls can be quit obvious.

8: Keep It Up

Your table will need regular check-ups. Moisture, temperature, and general day to day traffic can put you back on that slippery slope.

And there you have it! With a bit of patience and a sprinkle of elbow grease, you’ll have a table as level as a pancake.

It’s always best to be on the level!! 🎱🔧📐
